Ectocarpus siliculosus

Ectocarpus is a filamentous brown alga that is found in temperate coastal regions worldwide. This alga was proposed as a genetic and genomic model organism for the brown algae in 20041. The choice of Ectocarpus was based both on the small size of its genome, compared with those of other brown algae, and on a number of features that make it well adapted for genetic approaches, including its small size and its relatively short life cycle (about 3 months). A number of tools have been developed for Ectocarpus, including a complete genome sequence2, extensive transcriptomic data3, a large collection of strains and mutant lines and diverse protocols, for example for classical genetic techniques and mutant screens4. Ectocarpus is currently being used to study a broad range of aspects of brown algal biology including life cycle regulation, sex determination, morphogenesis, ecology and population genetics, resistance to biotic and abiotic stress and cell wall metabolism (3,5-8).
